A powerful earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale hit Nepal's capital, Kathmandu, early Tuesday morning. The earthquake was so strong that people felt it in Delhi-NCR and many other parts of northern India. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the quake occurred at 6:35 AM local time. Its epicenter was located 93 kilometers northeast of Lobuche, near the border between Nepal and Tibet. The sudden shaking caused widespread panic as people ran out of their homes and workplaces to seek safety.

7.1 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Nepal and Tibet |
Widespread Destruction and Casualties
The earthquake caused extensive damage, particularly in areas close to the epicenter. In Tibet, at least 53 people lost their lives, and many others remain trapped under collapsed buildings. According to the official Xinhua News Agency, 62 people sustained injuries. Critical infrastructure, including roads, bridges, and communication systems, was severely damaged, making it difficult for rescue teams to reach affected areas and assist those in need.
Hardest-Hit Areas
Some of the worst damage occurred in the towns around Shigatse, Tibet's second-largest city. Many homes and public buildings were reduced to rubble, leaving families homeless. Relief agencies have set up temporary shelters to provide safety and basic necessities to displaced residents. Approximately 1,500 emergency workers are in the region, searching for survivors and providing aid. Volunteers and medical teams are also on-site, offering first aid and distributing essential supplies like food and water. However, their efforts are being hampered by frequent aftershocks. These smaller tremors, some measuring over 4.5 on the Richter scale, continue to rattle the area and heighten fears of further collapses.
Impact on Mount Everest Region
The earthquake’s epicenter was about 75 kilometers (50 miles) northeast of Mount Everest, a region already known for its challenging terrain and high risk of seismic activity. Many trekking and climbing expeditions have been canceled due to safety concerns. Experts warn that this major earthquake could have long-term effects on the region's geological stability, increasing the likelihood of future seismic events.
Global Response and Relief Efforts
The international community has shown strong support for the affected regions. Several countries have offered financial assistance, rescue equipment, and specialized search-and-rescue teams to aid in relief efforts. Local governments and disaster relief organizations are working together to address immediate needs, including food, water, and medical care. At the same time, they are planning long-term strategies for rebuilding the damaged areas and helping communities recover from this devastating disaster.
